This collection contains prisoner records from Oslo, Norway, between the years 1880 and 1923. Records typically include the name of the prisoner, date and place of birth, residence, and an image of the prisoner. The “Botsfengselet,” or “Remedial prison,” was the National prison of Norway from the year 1851 to 1970. In 1975, it became part of the Oslo Prison. Many of these prisoners were interned in the Akershus festning (fortress), also known as the “Akershus National Penitentiary”. Before becoming a prison in the 19th century, it was a fortress and castle that was built in the 14th century. The prison part of the fortress was commonly referred to as the “Slaveriet”, or “The Slavery,” because the prisoners could be rented out for work. In 1901, Oslo was known as ‘Christiania’. This was because in 1624, after a devastating fire, King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway decided to rebuild the city and named it ‘Christiania’ in tribute to himself. In 1877, the spelling of the city's name was changed to ‘Kristiania’ to reflect modern Norwegian language reforms, although 'Christiania' continued to be used concurrently. However, in 1925, the original name of Oslo was restored. The index of this collection was produced by MyHeritage from scanned color images of the original documents.
